Qunqana, located in the Bensa district of Sidama, is a coffee processing station that sources coffee beans from small-scale farmers in the area. Founded by Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo under the company Daye Bensa Coffee, they own their own farm, Daye Bensa Farm, and also operate 16 coffee washing stations and 4 drying mills across the Bensa, Aroressa, and Chire districts of Sidama.
Daye Bensa, the son, dreamed of helping local coffee farmers reduce travel time and transportation costs, and of course, ensure they received fresh coffee beans. His dream came true when he established the first coffee washing station in the village of Girja with other co-founders in 1977, followed by another in Eltama, before establishing the main washing station, Qunqana, in 2002. This was after he moved to Daye in the Bensa district and started a family. Agriculture in this region has limited access to resources, so farmers don't use fertilizers or pesticides in coffee production.
Behind the cup: After brewing, the aroma blends jasmine and honey. The initial taste features bergamot. The flavor profile begins with berries, then transitions to black tea, peach, and grapefruit, with a honey-like sweetness and a fairly smooth body.
